August: when the light changes its angle

A story of truth, liberation and transformation to explain the energy of the month

Once upon a time, there was a woman who, every summer, eagerly awaited the month of August.

She didn’t know how to explain why, perhaps because in August the world seemed brighter, the sky larger, the colors more intense, the air warmer. Or perhaps because there was something unsettling about that light, a light that did not allow you to hide for too long.

One afternoon, while walking along a path she had always known, she noticed something she had never seen before.

At noon the Sun was high in the sky and everything seemed exposed, almost without depth. But now it was afternoon, the Sun had begun to tilt and, slowly, the shadows on the ground were growing longer.

The woman stopped, at first she looked at her own shadow, then at those of the trees, the stones, the branches and she understood something simple: nothing had appeared that had not existed before. The shadows had always been there.

Only one thing had changed: the light.

She continued walking. A few minutes later she arrived in front of an old iron gate. She did not remember it being there, she pushed it, and the gate opened without a sound. On the other side there was a path she had never seen before. The woman hesitated, she could have turned back, she could have convinced herself that the path did not exist, instead she stepped through.

The farther she walked, the quieter the landscape became, until she arrived in front of a small house. On the door there was a sentence carved into the wood: “Not everything you cannot see is absent.”

The woman stood still, she did not understand. Then the door opened, there was no one inside. There was only a large table. On the table were all the objects she had carried with her throughout her life: an old photograph, a letter, a key, a ring, a notebook. Then there were things that were not objects: a fear, a regret, a promise, a person she could not forget, a sentence someone had said to her many years before, a sense of guilt she had continued to carry even when no one was asking her to anymore. The woman looked at the table and understood: that was the weight she had continued to call life.

She moved closer, picked up the photograph and looked at it for a long time, then placed it back on the table.

She picked up the key, held it tightly in her fist and understood that some doors had never been locked from the outside, they had been locked by her. One by one, she began to let things go, she did not destroy them, she did not deny them, she acknowledged them and then laid them down. Because what has been can be honored without being continued.

When the table was empty, she noticed that a different light had entered the room, no longer the strong light of day but a soft, angled light. New shadows appeared on the floor and for the first time the woman was not afraid to look at them. She understood that they were not enemies of the light. They were what the light was finally allowing her to see.

She left the house. Outside, it was already evening and that was when she felt something. A movement in the air, she could not tell whether it was a sound, a memory or simply a sensation. It seemed to her that everything she had let go of was still there. Not in front of her, but beyond a threshold, as if the visible and invisible worlds had, for a moment, drawn closer together. She thought of the people she had loved, those she had lost, those she had never truly said goodbye to. She thought of the generations who had come before her and suddenly understood that some things did not need to be held onto in order to be remembered, they could be thanked, honored and then, released.

That night the sky was full of stars. The woman lay down on the grass, saw a streak of light cross the darkness, then another and another. For a moment she thought that perhaps some lights arrive precisely when the sky seems darkest.

She closed her eyes and inside herself she heard a question: “And now, who are you?” No answer came and strangely, for the first time, that was okay, because she had spent much of her life trying to know. Knowing where to go, what to choose, how things would end, what would happen next.

Now she no longer needed to know everything, she only needed to listen.

In the darkness she felt something moving within her, it was not yet a shape, not yet a decision, not yet a plan: it was simply a possibility, small, fragile, alive. Like a seed beneath the earth, and she understood that perhaps this was how the most important transformations began: not with an answer, but with an empty space. Not with certainty, but with the willingness to not know yet. Not with light that erases the darkness, but with the ability to move through it without losing yourself.

The following morning she returned to the path: the gate was gone, and so was the house. Yet the woman did not need to ask herself whether they had truly existed. Some experiences do not enter our lives to be explained, they come to change the way we see.

From that day on she continued walking, she had not become another person, she had simply become more true to herself.

When something ended, she no longer held onto it out of fear. When something began, she no longer demanded to know its shape immediately. When a truth arrived, she tried not to look away and when the shadows grew longer in the afternoon, she remembered.

The light had not diminished, it had simply changed its angle and then she smiled. Because she had finally understood that enlightenment does not mean living without shadows, it means having enough awareness to be able to look at them: without fear, without judgment, without the need to fight them.

Perhaps this was the true meaning of the threshold she had crossed: it did not lead to another world; it led more deeply within herself. And there, right where she thought she would find only what she needed to let go of, she found something that had never stopped waiting for her: the possibility of finally becoming herself.

I wish that this August may bring you the Light to see what you are ready to recognize, the Courage to let go of what you are no longer, and the Trust to embrace what, within you, is already present.
